Webinar: Social Justice Issues in Student Mental Health Access and Care
Tuesday, November 09, 2021, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM EDT
Category: AUCCCD Events
MiraCosta College Health Services serves the MiraCosta Community College District, which includes 4 campuses that total almost 30,000 students. Students who seek mental health counseling services represent a range of intersectional experiences in terms of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, etc (e.g. almost 2/3 are students of color, at least 25% identify as LGBTQIA+, and at least 25% are students who are undocumented and/or from mixed status families). As a result, MiraCosta College mental health counselors have the exceptional opportunity to approach their work using anti-oppressive practices which include frameworks of cultural humility, equity, critical theory, and liberation. Using this lens, workshop presenters will engage participants in an exploration of their individual, collective, and institutional power, privilege, oppression and fragility. Using an experiential series of art therapy exercises as well as clinical case studies, participants will be guided to explore this in three stages: fragments of self-concept and identity, regaining balance through the introduction of new concepts, and an opportunity for integration. Participants will gain a deeper consciousness of how their identities directly affect their work with students from historically marginalized groups, and tools for self-reflection and accountability that are central to social justice and equity-oriented clinical practices.
